I know personally I get a lot of the traits for my characters from the doll, or from the things that pop up in the first few weeks, so I don't like to lock in too many details too early because I know they'll change.
To give you some examples, here are some traits of my characters that they very quickly grew out of as I realised who I actually wanted them to be.
Bella - In her early stages when I was still waiting on the doll, Bella was a lot more secretive, and kept a much lower profile. But before that she started life as a male character, similar to what Cade has become now, she was a suave seductive demon with a dry wit, but that all quickly changed when I saw the Beryl and realised I liked her character even more as a strong woman. I actually played with the idea of giving her a male form early on before I fully decided I preferred her the way she is, it felt cheap to give her that crutch, and I think it weakened and confused her character to do that.
Lisette - Before I got her in doll form and before she even had a name fully decided, Liz was a lot more bratty. She was always cocky and self-assured, but it was in a much younger more naive way than the sultry eyed woman she became. This was back when I wasn't sure what sculpt to go with, so I think this was more a way of justifying a younger looking sculpt, as she would have been turned at say 16 instead of 19, but I came to realise this was not the kind of woman who would keep Bella interested for so long, so she quickly became someone I considered more fitting and more intriguing.
She's started to evolve a little more recently too with her interaction with other characters, like =seijikat's Amanita and Cire, I've had to explore more of her business side and her character outside her interactions with Bella, which has really helped to clarify her a little better in my head. In fact =seijikat's been pretty instrumental in working out Liz's character as she's been there the whole way, so I think input has really helped shape her over time as well, probably much better than I could have done with just myself.
Cade - Actually hasn't changed heaps, but has been fleshed out lots more recently. I actually agonised for a while with the idea of whether to bring him back or not, trying to find a way to make it vaguely believable. This is actually where the character of Byrne came in, because without him I couldn't see Cade's storyline working to a level I was satisfied with.
As such he grew as a character due to the attachment of Byrne, it was a lot easier to flesh him out as I could relate to him a bit more and start to see what he'd really be like rather than just a male Bella.
Similarly, like Liz, Cade has grown a lot recently due to his interaction with *Flayrah's Sasha (and Victor). I think just writing in their voice helps kinda put me in their mindset a little and think about what they'd really be like and how they'd really react. Do you guys find that too?
Byrne - Has probably had the most dramatic change over time. Byrne started his life as a female character named Merla, she was roughly the same being, but her personality was vastly different.
Merla was mysterious in a more sultry way, whereas Byrne is in a more stoic ominous way. I think this is largely due to the paradigm shift in my head when I moved the character to being male, Merla was just too feminine and I couldn't make that fit with the male version of the character. He quickly became more of an ever present silent type, and I worked in his bird traits in a completely different way. Needless to say I consider the characters almost completely separate now, they just served the same purpose, so while they cancel each other out, if I ever did work out a purpose for Merla, she could basically stand on her own.
So anyway, enough of that.
What about you guys?
Do you have characters which have changed over time? Even in little ways due to interactions with other characters, your own or other peoples?
I'm curious to see the process the rest of you go through as well.
